QUIKSILVER King of Aviones – Puerto Rico

Check out the video highlights from the Quiksilver King of Aviones, on October 31st, 2009.

Six o’ clock a.m. early morning of Halloween at San Juan’s infamous surf break Aviones. Quiksilver and the Puerto Rican Surfing Federation were busy setting the stage for Puerto Rico’s First ever Pro Skins event to unfold. The surf was typical Aviones and many locals took advantage of a cheap entry fee just to catch Aviones with only 4 other guys in the water! Being Halloween the criteria had a new twist though, Claim the highest scoring wave with a crazy costume and pocket an extra $50 in Cash. Puerto Rico’s finest surfers were on hand and many were in disguise with some pretty weird looking outfits. It seems that pro wrestling is still pretty popular amongst the latinos for most costumes involved a sort of wresting mask. Perhaps most selected these masks as sort of a intimidation tool to put out some psyche before there respected skins heat even started. One of the more popular costumes that may have been more of a motivator was Josie Graves, dressed as a Hooters Girl, for Josie with the ultra tight Orange shorts and tank top it proved to be quite effective and creepy psyche tool. Josie familiar with skins got on a early roll claiming four skins in a row in early round one with some solid power surfing. Josie looked as though he had a win on lock down! Other early standouts include Tommy Burshian with some huge tail wafting airs and Hector Sanatamaria with some nice air spins. The statesman Carlos Cabrero got real busy in the last heat of round one, going into round two Carlos had 3 skins with some solid air punts over the shallow inside reef section sticking them usually! Carlos was looking unstoppable until Roberto Cardona dressed as the Swamp thing put together a solid left-hander with some big turns good for a 7.5. San Juan’s favorite son Rafiel Lampart opened up with a power punctuated campaign surfing, in heat 4 of round two, Raffi claimed two skins in a row until Gus Betancourt and Juan “Legend” Ashton began looking like a run away train. Juan still showing the youngsters he may still be King of Puerto Rico pocketed 3 in a row before being stopped by Alejo Marin. The event came down a key moment when Gus Betancourt barely avoided a interference on late takeoff to blitz a left hander break his tie with Josie Graves and Claiming the WIN! Hail to Gus Betancourt as the new QUIKSILVER King of Aviones! Special Thanks to Quiksilver’s Rick Villanueva and Pablo Diaz for hosting a great event. Special Thanks also to Rene”The Crab” from the Puerto Rican Surfing Federation!
