Kelly Slater is in the Lead at the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau
December 8th, 2009 by Jamie TierneyWe’re nearly halfway through the 2009 Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau and 9x ASP World Champion and has taken the lead with an electrifying performance in Heat 2. Slater, 2002 champion of this event, aiming to be the first ever 2-time winner, dropped into the wave of the morning, got swallowed by a huge ball of whitewater and somehow emerged still on his feet. He caught his four allotted waves in 30 minutes had to come in to the beach with half of his heat remaining.
Mark Healey, Garrett McNamara, Carlos Burle and Peter Mel have also put up standout performances so far in Round 1. Watch all of the action on the live webcast with big waves still pumping and and Round 2 set to begin.

No disrespect to Greg Long ( he has a huge heart, courage and incredible skills and that wave was scary BIG ) but the judges blew that one “BIG TIME”. In the history of the Eddie and for the ENITRE DAY, you had to make the wave to get a high score!!!!! They let Greg Long’s winning wave be a wipeout. WHAT A COMPLETE JOKE AND SHAME. KELLY WON IN MY OPINION…. Check your history of past Eddie Cahmpions; Clyde, Keone, Brock, Noah, Ross C J, Bruce and Kelly & others ALL WON THE EDDIE BY MAKING THEIR WAVES ALL THE WAY TO THE SHOULDER.
