Kelly Slater is one heat away from a record 9th world title. He drove up to Spain from France this morning, rode a 4 fin in terrible waves at Sopelana Beach (a place he’d never surfed before) but still managed to bust a few airs and easily win his heat. He now only needs to beat his next opponent in Round 3 (probably a widcard) to clinch the crown. With good surf expected at Mundaka for the next few days, he psyching to get a few draining barrels and add another page to the record books. The contest will likely run Kelly’s dual heat format for Round 2 and there’s an outside chance that he could surf again tomorrow. It’s more likely to happen early in the AM on Friday.
