Kelly Slater convincingly won his Round 1 heat in Puerto Rico today to move him a step closer to winning his 10th world title. His only remaining rival, Jordy Smith, also won and both will surf again next in Round 3. Kelly can clinch #10 by making it to the semi finals at this event. Here’s what Kelly had to say after his heat:

“I actually felt a little jittery out there at the start,” Slater said. “I kind of found my feet towards the end and I feel a lot better now that I’m straight into Round 3. I have a really good support crew here. My girlfriend Kalani, my manager Terry and publicist Shelby are flying in. I flew Mark Cunningham over from Hawaii because he’s never seen me at a contest and I told him he had to come. I’ve seen a bunch of old friends from here and Florida and I have friends coming in from Barbados. I’m really thankful for all the support.”

Quiksilver surfers Dane Reynolds and Jeremy Flores also won their Round 1 heats to advance to Round 3 while Fred Patacchia and Travis Logie did not and will surf next in Round 2.

        RIP Andy Irons!
Along with Kelly AI was one of surfing’s most prestigious athlete.
He was one of the best surfers in the world and one of (or) the best adversaries of surfer Kelly for sure.
        Rest In Peace Andy!
