Congratulations to Jay Liesener and Jen Booth! After a week of difficult deliberation, Jay’s story stood out as the front runner to our judging panel consisting of Eddie invitee Peter Mel, Kelly Slater, and Reef McIntosh and Jen’s submission was chosen as our winner. “YES!!! Confirm that Jen and I can attend!! We are super stoked and very honored”, said Jay when we reached out to tell him the news. “Thank you again for this fantastic opportunity! It is truly a dream come true!”
Jay and three guests will be invited to attend the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau opening ceremony held at Waimea Bay, Oahu, on December 5th, 2013 and given a $1,000 gift card to shop at the Quiksilver store in Waikiki.
Jay grew up loving the ocean and being in the water but was injured in 1989 at age 17, breaking his neck doing a backflip on a trampoline. He had been sidelined for almost 20 years when Life Rolls On got him surfing again. With the help of a lot of amazing friends, he’s still surfing today. They are Jay’s self-proclaimed heroes and he is honored to inspire them! Jen Booth, the woman who nominated Jay, is a founding member of Team Surfgimp, Jay’s crew of friends and family who help him keep the stoke alive.
Here is Jen’s original hero submission:
Jay Would Go
Submitted by Jen Booth
Jay is my hero because of his “super-hero” strength and will. He lives in a battery operated chair, but he thrives in his alternatively fueled imagination and fortitude of mind over his physical limitations. Jay was injured in a trampoline accident more than 20 years ago, rendering him paralized from the neck down. But that doesn’t stop him from being the most inspiring surfer I know. He proudly proclaims himself “surfgimp” and I, and all his friends, proudly belong to his Team Surfgimp. His humbling efforts in the surf, as well as in his life, make him my greatest inspiration and the greatest hero ever! For photos of Jays extreme strength of character and surfing accomplishments, check out Team Surfgimp on Facebook and see how he shows his team how to have fun!
Quiksilver would like to extend sincere thanks to all that entered and voted. You ALL embody the spirit of Eddie Aikau and are an inspiration to us all. Mahalo.
