Mark Healey, Reef McIntosh and Clay Marzo just got back from Tahiti where they had a great run at the Teahupo’o trials event in Tahiti. The contest was held in perfect 4-6 foot barrels and Clay stole the show on Day 1, earning the highest total scores of nearly every round and taking out last year’s main event runner up, Manoa Drollet. Julian Wilson also surfed well in his first comp at the legendary spot but went down in Round 3. In the quarters, Reef narrowly beat Clay and then Healey slipped by Reef in the semis. Healey then surfed the final against local standout, Heiarii Williams and came in second. Unfortunately only one spot in the main event was up for grabs, which was a bummer because all of them would have done damage to the Top 45. Check out Jeff Flindt’s photos and stay tuned for action from Kelly Slater, Fred Patacchia and Jeremy Flores during the rest of the main event on the live webcast.
