This May, Brazil will become the surfing capital of the World with two major ASP events. The 3rd stop of the World Championship Tour will take place May 8-19 at Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. Followed by the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola, May 21-26, 100 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro at the famous Itauna Beach.

96 surfers from 17 different countries are confirmed to do battle for 6.500 points on ASP World Ranking in the hopes of cracking the top 10 and qualifying for the 2014 WCT. Half of the WCT surfers that will be competing in Rio will remain in Brazil to compete at one of the best waves in the country, including Bell’s Beach champion Adriano de Souza, Gabriel Medina, Nat Young, Adrian Buchan and defending champ Matt Wilkinson along with many other surfers from Hawaii, France, South Africa, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Tahiti, Ireland, Morocco, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Peru, Canary Islands and Guadeloupe.

Last year’s event was held in incredible 4-8 foot left-handers giving the competitors the perfect opportunity to showcase their skills. Australian Kai Otton reached the Final for the second year in a row but was unable secure back-to-back wins as fellow countrymen Matt Wilkinson reined supreme. Wilko went looney on his forehand giving both the crowd and judges a show that landed him a top the podium.

The Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola is produced by Adding Sports, sponsored by State of Rio de Janeiro through the Secretary of Sports and Leisure, Peugeot and the City of Saquarema. The Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection is taking place May 11, 2013 at the OC Fair and Events Center in Costa Mesa, CA. This year’s theme is “California Gold” and will focus on just that, boards and memorabilia with a California flair from the ’20s through the ’70s. Rain was the theme of this years Pro but with the cyclones came waves. The final day saw pumping waves at Kirra and everyone agreed it was some of the best conditions they had surfed in a contest. True to form Kelly Slater stole the show. In the Semi Kelly took down local hero and 2X World Champ Mick Fanning and in the final he got revenge on the current World Champ and another local boy Joel Parkinson. In the dying minutes Parko needed a near perfect ten point ride and the wave to secure the score came to him. Parko paddled into the wave of the final and stood tall in the grinding tube knowing that it was a magical one. However, Kelly put his priority to use, starred down the tube into Parko’s eyes and stroked into the pealing Kirra perfection as Parko flipped him the bird. A moment that will be forever preserved on the Social Media super highway.

One of the best things about the Quiksilver Pro is the surfing going on around the event. After countless cyclones and tropical storms the perfect grinding right tube of Snapper Rocks had turned into a playful left with air sections so big the very sight of them made the best surfers in the world go weak at the knees. Craig Anderson had no problem with this and put on a show day after day. As did all the groms and between watching their favorite surfers compete they spent hours in and around the contest area trying to stomp new maneuvers.

With time counting down until the release of ‘Slow Dance’ a movie Dane is working on that will feature Ando the boys put in some serious time in Australia. Gathering footage for a film can be stressful…conditions don’t always lineup, your boards aren’t feeling good or sometimes you’re just plain kooking it. Luckily everything clicked on this trip and each day reports came in from beaches all around Queensland that Dane and Ando where enjoying their surfs while stacking clips.

This is a Mark Richard shaped twin fin that Dane won in a super session during the Pro.

A few weeks later some of the Quik crew headed to Bells Beach for the second stop of the World Tour. With Kelly, Jeremy and others all losing early it was our junior Italian surfer Leonardo Fioravanti that stole the show. He took out the Grom Search event with ease posting two rides in the 8 point range. For Leo’s win he was awarded a wildcard into the trials of WCT event in Portugal. Leo’s travel partner and biggest rival Kanoa Igarashi didn’t have as great of an event and things just got worse. One afternoon surfing Winkipop Kanoa took off on a left, launched a huge backside air, landed and snap…broken tibia and fibia. For his effort Kanoa, unfortunately, got awarded a cast the length of his leg and couldn’t fly home to California for two more weeks. Bummer. On the bright side, Kanoa is now home and should be back surfing sooner than later.

With a solid swell sweeping its way up Chile’s coastline the Quiksilver Ceremonial trials were held at 18-20 foot Punta de Lobos. The left hand point break hosted a field of 24 surfers all battling it out for a ticket to the main event. After some crazy wipeouts and epic rides the top 4 surfers will have a chance to surf in the first stop of the 2013/14 Big Wave World Tour. Congratulations to all who qualified, see you when the Quiksilver Ceremonial gets green lit!

I’m laying here in my tent on Day 91 at Oyster Bay chickee. It’s 11:49PM, and I’ve had a curious rat keeping me company all evening. I dozed off earlier while reading and awoke to a furry silhouette directly above my head as he darted across my primary tent pole. That might sound a bit uncomfortable to most, and I suppose it should be; I was a little frustrated with him for keeping me awake, but I’d prepared for his arrival this time and had all my gear inside my tent. That clearly frustrated him, as well, hence the disrespectful peeking.

When you’re with another human being, you lose a bit of that with the confidence of their presence. You’re still civilized–a touch of savage would be silly. I feel alive with that touch of savage, and it feels right to pick up that knife and defend your camp. It’s not the pesky little rat–it’s stepping outside your tent into that dark and deafening orchestra of sound, alone in the middle of the swamp, to look this wilderness in the eyes confidently and respectfully–to earn your place in its world. Kelly Slater (USA), 41, 11-time ASP World Champion and 2012 ASP World Runner-Up, has claimed the 2013 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover in firing three-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) barrels at Kirra over reigning ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS), 31, in front of a capacity crowd on the Gold Coast.

The opening stop on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the Quiksilver Gold Coast culminated in fine fashion today with a tube-riding shootout between two of the sport’s greatest champions.

Slater and Parkinson opened their 40-minute Final bout with a rapid-fire exchange of tube-riding displays, vaulting the lead back and forth before Slater nailed a 9.93 for an incredibly-deep barrel punctuated by a full-velocity forehand gaff.

“It was just fun today,” Slater said. “I really wanted to surf Kirra as I made known the other day and it was great fun out there. We thought the swell was going to be too East, but it’s really really good out there and to get to surf it with Joel (Parkinson) is even better. He’s one of the best and we had a lot of fun out there.”

Today win marks Slater’s 52nd elite tour victory of his career, but the iconic Floridian admits that it’s a long season ahead in terms of the hunt for the 2013 ASP World Title.

“They’re all important but it’s nice to get off to a good start,” Slater said. “The three top seeds – Joel, myself and Mick all finished in the top three spots and Michel (Bourez) had a great event too. Momentum shifts throughout each season and a lot can happen. It’s probably the most talented field that has ever been on tour and there are nine more events. I’m committed to the tour this season.”

Parkinson looked unbeatable on the final day of the event, collecting a Perfect 10 in his morning Semifinal before posting an excellent 17.47 in his Final against Slater. However, the impressive scoreline would prove insufficient against the American’s onslaught and the reigning ASP World Champion would post a Runner-Up finish in the opening event of the year.

In the final, the difference came down to strategy and one Dane Reynolds-esque turn at the end of Slater’s highest scoring ride. The turn alone was worthy of a $75,000 check and indeed the victory. In truth, the maneuver separated Slater from Parkinson by far more than the 2 points indicated on the final score line. Sparingly, the judges did leave the door open for a comeback from Parkinson, but when Slater used his priority and faded Parkinson on a certain 10 point ride, it was the equivalent of slamming the door in the current World Champ’s face.

“When Kirra is doing what it’s doing out there today, it doesn’t feel like an event,” Parkinson said. “I had some great waves and a lot of fun, and to get to do it with the singlet on is icing on the cake. I appreciate all the local support out here today and Runner-Up is a good start to the season. Bring on Bells.”

A new highlight at this year’s event was the Crowd’s Call, an interactive voting feature which let fans have their voice be heard on many topics throughout the contest including a first in any world tour event, the Super Heat. Between the semi-finals and final, a single heat was held where fans voted in each of the 5 participants who would surf against each other in exhibition. Dane Reynolds, Stephanie Gilmore, Craig Anderson, Jordy Smith, and 1978 World Champion Rabbit Bartholomew all went to battle and didn’t disappoint. The winner by majority vote was Steph, who took down the guys and took home a replica Mark Richards single fin custom surfboard. followed by Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith, who took home an MR twin fin and Simon Anderson thruster (3 fin) respectively.

The next stop on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) will be the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford from March 27 – April 7, 2013.

Jay grew up loving the ocean and being in the water but was injured in 1989 at age 17, breaking his neck doing a backflip on a trampoline. He had been sidelined for almost 20 years when Life Rolls On got him surfing again. With the help of a lot of amazing friends, he’s still surfing today. They are Jay’s self-proclaimed heroes and he is honored to inspire them! Jay Would Go

Jay is my hero because of his “super-hero” strength and will. He lives in a battery operated chair, but he thrives in his alternatively fueled imagination and fortitude of mind over his physical limitations. Jay was injured in a trampoline accident more than 20 years ago, rendering him paralized from the neck down. But that doesn’t stop him from being the most inspiring surfer I know. He proudly proclaims himself “surfgimp” and I, and all his friends, proudly belong to his Team Surfgimp. His humbling efforts in the surf, as well as in his life, make him my greatest inspiration and the greatest hero ever! As a major destination for Spring Breakers, the Ocean Deck gets pretty packed but is worth checking out for the scene, reggae band, and gator bites. Daytona Beach; oceandeck.com

6. Mad Dog Surf Shop (SHOP)
This local, indie shop in Daytona will hook you up with the perfect board. Daytona Beach; surfmaddog.com

7. Coconuts on the Beach  (PARTY)
Cheap drinks and eats plus a prime location make this an ideal place to people-watch. Cocoa Beach

8. Lotus Boutique Inn & Suites   (SLEEP)
If you want an alternative to the nonstop party hotel, this modern boutique inn is perfect. Its rooms overlook the ocean and offer a range of comforts like kitchenettes and in-room Jacuzzis. Daytona Beach; lotusinnandsuites.com

9. Simply Delicious Cafe & Bakery (EAT/DRINK)

6. Surfsipuedes (SHOP)
This local shop is proud to rep Mexican surf culture and offers lessons, too. Two locations in San Jose del Cabo; surfsipuedes.com

7. Terranova (EAT/DRINK)
Housed in the wallet-friendly Posado Terranova Hotel, this restaurant serves up traditional Mexican breakfast in an awesome terrace setting (get the red and green chilaquiles!). San Jose del Cabo; hterranova.com.mx

8. Cabo Wabo Cantina (PARTY)

It was a day of mixed results for top seeded surfers, current ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson (Aus) and defending Quiksilver Pro Champion, Taj Burrow (Aus) were both relegated into tomorrow’s sudden death round two heats after opening round losses. It was a better day for Kelly Slater (USA), former two world champion Mick Fanning (Aus), John John Florence (Haw) and Brazilian protégé Gabriel Medina (BRA) all included amongst the days winners to secure round three berths.

Parkinson, 31, was forced to settle for a runner-up result to Matt Wilkinson (Aus), 24, who narrowly outpointed the hometown hero. Wilkinson put on a powerful display of backhand surfing to defeat Parkinson by a mere fraction of a point, with wildcard Brent Dorrington (Aus) finishing third. Dorrington said he was surprised by the result but looking forward to a Parkisnon rematch.Wilkinson said he was happy to compete at Rainbow Bay.

Eleven-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) progressed to round three after winning a highly anticipated and hard fought opening heat. The Floridian surfed selectively and posted two high scores on his final two waves to secure the win. The 41 year-old is competing for an unprecedented 12th ASP World Title in 2013. Slater defeated fellow Americans Kolohe Andino and event wildcard, Dane Reynolds.

Hawaiian surfing superstar John John Florence scored a close win against tour veteran Kai Otton (Aus) to advance directly into round three of the Quiksilver Pro on Australia’s Gold Coast today. Thirty-three year-old Otton found a high-scoring ride late in the heat, and came within .20 of twenty year-old Florence. America’s Pat Gudauskas finished third to be relegated along with Otton into round two. Florence said securing a round three berth was important.

Two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (Aus) commenced his 2013 campaign with a win over Brazil’s William Cardoso and World Tour rookie, Sebastian Zietz (Haw). Fanning opened his account early in the heat with an excellent ride and scored 9.17, and then followed 8.07 to leave both opponents to play catch-up for the entire match-up. Fanning into Round 3. Cardosa and Zietz into the sudden death round two heats.

Defending champion Taj Burrow (Aus) was defeated by an inform Bede Durbidge (Aus) and Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro (BRA) in the opening heat of the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour. Thirty year-old Durbidge, admitted to early nerves before settling down to lock in a heat high 8:00 wave score to secure a round three berth with victory. Monterio and Burrow relegated into the sudden death Burrow who failed to back up a 7.27 wave score also admitted to opening nerves.

Brazil’s Gabriel Medina claimed a last-minute win against Portugal’s Tiago Pires and Australian Kieren Perrow in round one. Needing a solid score in the dying minutes, 19 year-old Medina found a wave and locked in a 9.5 score to overtake Pires and advance through to round three of the event. Despite the win, Medina required assistance to walk after incurring an ankle injury during the encounter and was taken to hospital for further medical treatment.

An in-form Alejo Muniz defeated America’s Nat Young and Australian Josh Kerr in heat eight of the round. Muniz, 23, held a convincing lead throughout the matchup and advances straight through to the third round of the event, leaving Young and local surfer, Kerr to battle the sudden-death round two.

Muniz said that he feels at home surfing on the Gold Coast.

World number 15, Michel Bourez claimed a tight win over Australia’s Owen Wright and ASP World Tour rookie, Filipe Toledo. Wright, 23, posted a near-perfect score of 9.5 and Toledo a 9.67 but both were unable to find a high-scoring second wave to overtake a methodical Bourez who posted two excellent scores during the round one clash.

French surfer Jeremy Flores dominated his round one heat, only to have victory snatched from him in the final minutes by America’s Brett Simpson. Florez’s efforts to counter Simpson were unsuccessful and he will now surf again in the repechage round two. Australia’s Adrian Buchan placed third in the bout and he will join Florez in the sudden-death round scheduled to start tomorrow.

South Africa’s Travis Logie posted two excellent scores in the final minutes of the second heat of the day to advance through to the third round and relegate runner-up Adriano De Souza (Bra) and Hawaii’s Dusty Payne into round two.

Australian wildcard, Brent Dorrington will re-meet Parkinson in the first heat of round two in an all-local showdown. America’s Dane Reynolds will surf in heat two of the round against world number five, Adriano De Souza (BRA).

Quiksilver invited me to do the First-Ever vert demo in India last year. Without asking details, I agreed immediately. We put together a solid group of vert dudes that were up for an adventure and flew to the other side of the world. What followed was a whirlwind trip of spicy food, a visit to Ghandi’s house, excited kids & big 540′s.

Travis Logie is from Durban, South Africa and says his favorite waves are Macaronis, Restaurants and J-Bay. This footage wasn’t shot at any of these far-off places but he’s ripping nonetheless.

As we rolled down the road from Austin to El Paso, Texas the environments we encountered were in constant flux. From city life to country life it seemed each tank of gas was a ticket to something new…two lane highways littered with vultures and road kill to the high-rises of downtown Austin the adventures never stopped for Jake Donnelly, David Clark and Reese Forbes. Thank you Texas for showing us a good time, the people and skate spots we came across will forever be remembered.
