And like his waves Healey doesn’t go for the guppies. With that said, Healey was recently spearfishing in Fiji where he plugged a massive Dogfish Tuna. I wonder what took more effort diving down and reeling this beast in or trying to eat it all? Either way I’m sure Healey slayed the challenge.

On the beautiful “North Shore Of Oahu.” Where girls judge you by your surfing status and where Reef McIntosh will leave you crying on the beach because of the wave he just caught. Happens every time, I’ll put money on it.

As this winter has been probably the worst one for waves ever, there has still been plenty going on. First off, The Rell Sunn Menehune. When I showed up on the final day there were perfect 2-3ft waves pouring through Makaha. This contest had some of the best 12 and under surfing I’ve ever seen in my life. Big props to Quiksilver team riders Cody Young (3rd) and Ryder Guest (4th) for making the final, and congratulations to Finn Migill for scoring a 9.5 and a perfect 10 to stop the final.

The Eddie ceremony was a great turnout. A lot of people, great vibes, insane food and, a majority of the invitees showed up. Although Quiksilver’s Peter Mel wasn’t there, his son John was on hand to represent the family. Thanks to all that showed and prey for surf so this thing will run this year!!!

Away from the ocean, every year all the surfers on the north shore give back to the kids of sunset elementary. “Surf Night” is an event where all the biggest pros sit in a row and sign posters for all the young up and comers. Sponsors donate product prize packs for raffle and kids go home with posters and all of there favorite surfers autographs. It’s awesome to see how starstruck all these kids were. Really an experience!

Another great event that took place outside the ocean was the Quiksilver signing with NEX in Pearl Harbor. This is when Quiksilver and the team riders give back to the men and women in uniform. This years signing included the two time world champ Tom Carroll and the HI Big Wave Legend Mark Healey. The boys signed this years Eddie Aikau event poster and past out this years sticker to the packed crew on tap. Epic event!

Well, this winter is well on it’s way. Every surfer from everywhere in the whole world that thinks they’re anything is here. As the Sunset Beach World Cup finished yesterday and the Pipe Masters waiting period right around the corner, the sand has shifted and there looks like there’s a insane WNW on the way. “Does someone want to get into their wetsuit and stand in the snow with a surfboard in those trees?” asks Legend Photographer, Jeff Hornbaker, calling out from his car to mine which also happens to have Tom Carroll, Rusty Long, Pete Mel, & Mark Healey sitting in it.  Silence was the response.  Our windows don’t roll down and whoever speaks up first will most likely end up in the snow.  We’ve all just wrapped up a Quiksilver Waterman trip/shoot in a very remote part of Canada and were making the 9 hour drive back to a Ferry that wasn’t going to wait for us.  Jeff is now staring at our car patiently for a response, he’s not budging either.  All of us enjoyed our time in Canada, TC flew 2 days from Oz just to make it.  We had scored some fun waves, met with smiles & hospitality everywhere we went, saw places rarely if ever a man has walked, took some photos, and froze our butts off wondering how the bald eagles, wolves, bears, and any life at all can survive in such a frigid environment.  We were able to stand our ground with the whole wetsuit in the snow bit, and moved on just making our ferry by minutes.  These are a few behind the scenes pics taken with my iPhone during our shoot.  They obviously pale in comparison to what Hornbaker was able to capture and that is still to come.  For now enjoy a couple simple photographs.

Today was the first solid Pipe swell of the winter, the year and the final day of the Backdoor shootout.  The surf was 8-10 feet with a couple  bigger sets. Tyler “Ted” Newton was in the first heat of the day for the Quiksilver team. This was the first time Tyler surfed in over a month cause he broke his hand earlier in the winter.  But you wouldn’t have noticed by the way he surfed.

As the day went on the Pipe guys were pushing it harder and harder. Team Quiksilver had the lead till Nathan Fletcher set the pace with a solid score of 11 out of 12.  He rolled in easy from second reef and pulled up into a bomb and from then on team Vans had their eyes on first place. Mark Healey went out and put on a clinic and scored two 10 point rides out of 12 but wasn’t enough to take the lead.


Around 2 o’clock the wind started to pick up and gave it a little texture and it got a little harder to get some high scoring barrels, but this is when John John turned on getting a bomb Backdoor wave all the way across sealing the deal and putting the nail in the coffin for the win for him and his team.

The Surfer Poll Awards, known as the Oscars of surfing, moved from Orange County to Hawaii this year and Quiksilver team riders Kelly Slater, Dane Reynolds, Julian Wilson and Craig Anderson came up big. 10x ASP world champion Slater won the poll while Reynolds finished 2nd and Wilson took 9th. Anderson won the Breakthrough Performer award.

Kelly was typically humble and magnanimous in his speech telling a classic Andy Irons story and informing the crowd and audience online that he hopes Dane wins next year because he’s the most influential surfer in the world but “he’s never won anything in his life.” Dane also brought the house down with his self effacing charm by saying he can’t believe he took second because he still feels like he’s at the bottom of the totem pole in Hawaii.

Julian, who’s currently in 2nd place in the Triple Crown standings, was stoked to make his first appearance in the Surfer Poll with many more likely to come in the future. Ando was also thrilled to take the coveted Breakthrough Performer Award.

North Shore local and top ASP surfer Fred Patacchia did a great job co-hosting the event with Sal Masekela and big wave charger Mark Healey provided backstage commentary for the live webcast. A special 10 minute video to Andy Irons from “Scratching the Surface’s” director Matt Beauchesne brought tears to everyone’s eyes as did Andy’s brother Bruce’s acceptance speeches for AI’s 6th place finish in the Poll and win for Best Barrel of the Year.

Congrats to Kelly, Dane, Julian and Ando from everyone at Quiksilver.
