October 19th, 2009 by Andy Ryan

Quiksilver has long supported surfers throughout the Caribbean and is once again bringing back its skins format surfing contests with the Quiksilver King of Aviones! This time with a $3000 Cash Skins purse at the famed Aviones break in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Known as the most consistent surf spot on the North coast of Puerto Rico, Aviones is where many of Puerto Rico’s finest have honed their surfing skills during their younger years and still often go.

Located just minutes away from Old San Juan and still heavily patrolled by those who call Puerto Rico home. “Aviones is a wave you can always count on for a surf no matter what,” says Pablo Diaz Quiksilver Sales & Contest Co-Organizer. Avoines, named for being the flight path of Airplanes taking off from San Juan’s International Airport, is also in the flight path of swarms of Mosquitos… The true locals of the surf break

The Quiksilver King of Aviones will take place Oct 31 -November 1st, 2009. Considering the occasion of Halloween, Quiksilver has brought in a Trick or Treat fun factor, with extra cash for claiming the best wave and claiming the best scoring costume all in one, of course this component is optional! Teaming up with the Puerto Rican Surfing Federation for this event, the whole Caribbean & Puerto Rico is looking forward to a huge turnout!

Aviones Beach, in the Piñones sector of Isla Verde, is one of the prime surfing spots in the Greater San Juan area. It is frequented by both professional surfers and ‘gremos,’ as beginners are called in Puerto Rican surf slang. The beach is called ‘aviones’ or airplanes because it stands at the end of the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport’s runway. Hungry? There are plenty of street-side kiosks selling fresh seafood and fried local creations. Aviones, nice reef break, the left is longer and has a nice wall, (gives a hell of a tube). Nice spot to surf and hangout. Clear water and better no need of wet suit. In general Aviones a nice wave to have a contest. See you there, from the local killers of Puerto Rico!!!!

I moved to PR at 12 yrs of age, I am now 35. Surfed aviones hundreds of times. Good wave and looks like its going to have the perfect size swell for the spot. Best on NE or West swell. West swell makes the wave peak way behind the bowl section for a cofortable set-up for intense barrels and long lefts. The more common NE swell sets up an A-Frame type wave with a shorter but hollower left and a longer shreddable right due to another section added on the inside.

    Enjoy!!

    Reef
    Shallow shelf
    power!
good from 2ft to 7ft anything more usually squares the whole thing out.
